Chittagong Medical College is a Government institution financed and administered by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Standard of medical Education is supervised and maintained by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) – a statutory body, who prescribes the preliminary qualifications needed to study medicine, the period of study, the subjects of study and the examinations. All the regulations of the administrative authorities are communicated and implemented through the Principal who is the Executive head of the college.
This is the highest body of the college. Principal is the Chairman of the Council. Members of the Academic Council are the Director of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), the Head of Departments, Professors, two senior-most Associate Professors, two senior-most Assistant Professors and two elected students representatives viz.
The Vice-President and the General Secretary of the Students’ Union. This body monitors and maintains control of the campus in order to ensure a smooth progress of the academic activities. It also refers the disciplinary matters to the Disciplinary Committee to take disciplinary actions against those who violate any rule or regulation of the college or of discipline.
Chaired by the Principal the committee consists of the Director of CMCH and all full Professors of the college to deal with all Disciplinary matters referred by the Academic Council.
All teachers of CMC are the members of this Council. This Council discusses the matters of bigger interest and can refer any matter to the academic Council for consideration.
Quality AssuQuality Assurance Body (QAB)
A local Quality Assurance Body (QAB) is working to achieve the following
a. Preparation & implementation of academic calendar
b. Monitoring of teaching activities
c. Critical review
d. Staff development
e. External Assessors
f. Quality audit
g. Preparation of Annual Report.
This is one of the most active bodies aimed at controlling the quality of teaching
to produce quality doctors of the community. It tries to ensure a coordinated
effort between the teachers and the students of the college. Regular seminars,
symposia and workshop are arranged to promote its activities. There is one
subject coordinator in each subject who prepares the study program in respective
There are three phase co-coordinators who co-ordinates the programs of different
departments of the same phase. As a result of these activities, the academic
calendar runs smoothly. An Academic coordinator organizes and co-ordinates all
the activities of the whole body. Vice Principal of the College is the Chairman
Medical Education Unit (MEU)
The teachers of the college can enjoy the facilities of the Medical Education Unit.
Seminars and symposia are arranged regularly which enable them to exchange views with the colleagues of other disciplines. They can also use the media production facility equipped with computers, photocopiers, and slide maker etc, the library of the unit, the seminar hall and the medical skill room situated in the hospital building to aid in teaching in a more effective way. The internet access facilities are also available to an intending browser. The teachers are much benefited from the activities of the unit by learning new teaching and assessment methods. It is run by a group of teachers through different Committees. Most of these committee members are qualified and received training in countries like UK, USA and Australia on teaching methodology.
A Research Cell is operating in Chittagong Medical College for sponsoring, organizing, supervising and monitoring the operational researches in collaboration with Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC). This outfit regularly arranges programs on research methodology for teachers. This is to be mentioned that this institute is one of the leading in the country which is operating some operational researches in collaboration with many overseas universities plus UN Agencies like WHO, UNICEF and ICDDRB and is also acclaimed in home and abroad on this behalf.
The Chittagong Medical College Students’ Union (CMCSU) is an elected body of the students of the college. All the students elect 20 member representative body once a year by direct voting. CMCSU deals with the matters related to welfare of the students in both their academic progress as well as their day-to-day life in the campus. They organize co-curricular and extra-curricular programs throughout the year. Literary, cultural, games and sports competition arranged by them bring welcome relief to the otherwise strenuous study schedules.
